...EXTENDED PERIOD OF ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED FOR THE
NORTHWEST MOUNTAINS WITH SNOW BECOMING MORE WIDESPREAD OVER
WESTERN AND NORTHERN NEW MEXICO...
An active weather pattern is forecast through the middle of next
week and possibly for the rest of January. A series of
disturbances will pass over northern and central New Mexico today
through next Tuesday, with each one bringing successively colder
air to the region.
A moist southwest flow has set up over northwest New Mexico and
will persist through tonight. While snow levels will remain
relatively high, accumulating snow will continue over the Tusas
Mountains, where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect.
Although brief lulls in precipitation are expected, accumulating
snow is forecast to resume and become more widespread over the
west and north by Sunday. Another and colder storm system will
bring additional snow to the region Monday through Tuesday. Snow
levels will gradually lower, as temperatures fall to below normal
values. Unfortunately, portions of the eastern plains may see
little to no precipitation from this series of storms.
Warmer and drier conditions are possible around the middle of
next week but another storm is possible late next week.
Those with recreational or travel plans over the higher terrain of
northern and western New Mexico this weekend and early next week
should be prepared to encounter deteriorating and hazardous
winter travel conditions. Stay alert to forecast changes,
especially regarding additional winter weather watches, warnings
or advisories.
